My counter is constantly on the 100+ range and I'm unable to clear it!

If I enter a conversation that has many unread messages and scroll it, the unread counter decreases only partially, probably the read status is related to the hover, for a minimum amount of time. I would just mark all messages as read when entering a conversation.

Then I would add in the main section a "Mark all as read" button that acts on all the conversations.

My read counter doesn't show. Sometimes it says 1 and I go read the message. So I think you just have a back-log.

Mark all as read is a good idea though.
